What are dental veneers?
A veneer is a thin, tooth-shaped shell of porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Each veneer is made for your tooth, so the size, shape and shade match the rest of your smile.
What veneers can correct
- Chipped or worn teeth
- Stains and discoloration that whitening does not remove
- Gaps between teeth
- Uneven, short or misshapen teeth
- Slightly crooked teeth in suitable cases
Porcelain veneers vs. Lumineers
| Feature | Traditional porcelain veneers | Lumineers |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | Thin porcelain shell | Ultra-thin porcelain shell |
| Tooth preparation | A small amount of enamel is usually removed | Often little or none in suitable cases |
| Best for | Larger color, shape or alignment changes | Subtle changes in healthy teeth |
| Reversibility | Not reversible once enamel is removed | May be less invasive, depending on your teeth |
The right choice depends on your teeth, your bite and what you want to change. Your dentist will explain which one fits you and why.
Benefits of porcelain veneers
- Natural look. Porcelain reflects light much like natural enamel.
- Stain-resistant. Veneers resist coffee, tea and wine better than natural teeth.
- Custom-made. Each veneer is crafted for your smile.
- One treatment, several fixes. Color, shape and gaps can be improved at the same time.
- Long-lasting. With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last ten years or more.
Veneers, whitening, bonding or aligners?
- Whitening brightens the natural color of your teeth. See teeth whitening.
- Bonding repairs small chips and gaps with tooth-colored resin.
- Veneers change color, shape and size at once.
- Aligners and braces move teeth into position. See Invisalign.

Are you a good candidate for veneers?
You may be a good candidate if your teeth and gums are healthy and you have enough enamel for bonding. Tooth decay and gum disease should be treated first. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can protect your veneers. If your teeth are crooked, it can be better to straighten them first. Take our short guide: Are veneers right for you?
Veneer cost and payment
The cost depends on how many veneers you need, the material and the complexity of your case. We give you a written treatment plan and fee before you begin. Cosmetic treatment is often not covered by insurance, and we offer CareCredit financing.
