Tooth Sensitivity to Hot and Cold and How to Prevent It

Tooth Sensitivity to Hot and Cold and How to Prevent ItTeeth may cause pain when they are chipped or cracked or when there is erosion from a cavity. However, teeth may also become sensitive without obvious injury, resulting in pain when exposed to factors that include hot and cold.

Over time, the enamel surface covering of the teeth can wear down and the gums can recede exposing a bit of the tooth root. These events can result in teeth becoming sensitive to a variety of factors. Although you are most likely to hear about those with sensitive teeth being affected by hot and cold, foods and beverages that are sour, sticky, or sweet.

To prevent sensitive teeth, it is important to take proper care of your teeth and gums. Use a toothbrush with a soft head to avoid wearing down the surface enamel. Brush in soft, even strokes, taking care around the gum line. Carefully brush at the gum line to remove food and plaque without pushing the gum away from the root. Use non-abrasive toothpaste that contains fluoride or one especially designed for sensitive teeth. Reducing acidic foods and drinks can help.

It is important to maintain your twice a year dental exams. Our North Hollywood dentist can make recommendations to help prevent sensitive teeth or to treat the issue if it occurs. If home treatments are not effective in treating sensitive teeth, the dentist can use sealants, crowns, and other methods to reduce pain and sensitivity.
