Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Causes of Tooth SensitivityTooth sensitivity is a common complaint that can make it difficult for people to enjoy their favorite foods or beverages. It can have a number of different causes and is often highly treatable. Our dentist in North Hollywood advises patients who are suffering from tooth sensitivity to schedule an appointment to evaluate their dental health.

Erosion

The enamel of your teeth can be eroded by a highly acidic diet, GERD, harsh brushing or abrasive toothpastes. Once the enamel is dissolved away, the dentin can become exposed. When enamel is lost, it cannot be restored. By eliminating acidic foods and beverages and switching to a soft-bristled brush can cut back on further damage. Toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth may be able to reduce your discomfort.

Gum Recession

A receding gumline is most commonly associated with periodontal disease, which is caused by the bacteria in plaque. As the gums recede, they leave the roots exposed and sensitive. Our dentist may recommend periodontal treatments to correct tissue loss.

Decay or Damage

Decay that has reached the sensitive dentin or a tooth that has been fractured may become highly sensitive to temperature changes and sweet or sour foods. Fillings, inlays, onlays or dental bonding may be necessary to restore the damaged tooth.

Infection

An infected tooth may be painful, or it may react strongly to temperature changes. A root canal treatment will eliminate the sensitivity and the infection while preserving the structure and function of the tooth.

If your teeth are sensitive, our dentist can help. Give us a call to schedule your appointment.
