Tips for Preventing Oral Health Problems

Tips for Preventing Oral Health ProblemsWhile the mouth may appear to be just a small part of the body, it contains millions of microorganisms, many of which may be harmful to the teeth and gums. The most common dental problems can be prevented, so it is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices.

Sensitive teeth are a common dental issue. Teeth may become sensitive to certain foods and drinks, as well as to brushing and flossing. This occurs when some of the tooth enamel wears away or the gum recedes from the tooth crown. Harsh brushing or inadequate brushing can lead to sensitivity.

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth damage the tooth enamel and erode the softer dentin within the tooth. This is caused by inadequate cleaning of the teeth and the formation of plaque being left on the surface of teeth that allows bacteria to eat away at the enamel.

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease and the most common cause of bad breath. With improper oral hygiene, plaque gets under the gum line, resulting in bacterial growth at the roots of teeth and in the gum tissue.

To reduce the risk of these common but preventable dental health issues, brush teeth twice a day and floss daily. See your dental provider twice a year for exams and professional cleanings. Our North Hollywood dentist can take care of all of your oral health needs and make recommendations for you to keep your mouth healthy.
