Remedies for Tooth Sensitivity

Remedies for Tooth SensitivityPeople suffering from sensitive teeth may experience a shock of pain when sipping hot tea or biting into an ice cream cone. They may even notice pain when they eat something sweet or sour. These symptoms can eventually lead to them avoiding many of their favorite foods and drinks. Finding out why your teeth hurt can help you find relief.

The pain of sensitive teeth occurs when the tubules in the dentin, or inner layer of the teeth, transmits a painful sensation to the tooth nerve. Usually dental enamel, or the outer coating of the teeth, prevents this from happening, but the dentin can become more exposed when gums recede or when enamel becomes worn.

If you have sensitive teeth, you do not have to subject yourself to a life of bland, lukewarm foods and drinks. Supplements such as thiamine and calcium hydroxyapatite can help reduce sensitivity and rebuild dental enamel. You can also apply clove-based oils or medications to relieve sensitivity.

When your teeth are sensitive, you will also need to avoid brushing aggressively. Limit your intake of acidic foods and drinks, and use mouthwash sparingly. Visit us at least twice a year for cleanings and checkups. We may also recommend fluoride treatments to help strengthen enamel. If your gums have receded, we may suggest dental bonding or another treatment to protect the exposed roots.

Prevent sensitive teeth by brushing your teeth gently with fluoride toothpaste and by eating a healthy, balanced diet that nourishes your teeth. Call us today to schedule your next checkup with our dentists.
