Important Reasons for Brushing Your Teeth
Good oral health isn't the only factor to consider when it comes to keeping teeth clean. When you don't brush your teeth, this can ultimately lead to diseases and conditions that affect other areas of the body as well.
Brushing helps remove harmful germs that grow in the mouth and form on teeth and gums. These germs can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar and can result in the formation of cavities. These germs can also lead to periodontal disease in the form of gingivitis or worse.
Gingivitis is a common gum disease that is made worse by not brushing and flossing on a regular basis. Gums can become red, swollen, and may even bleed. Left untreated, this can progress into worse forms of periodontal disease, leading to receding gums, loss of bone in the jaw, and eventual loss of teeth. Infections can occur in the gums, lips, cheek, and bones.
These germs can then travel through the blood stream, affecting other areas of the body. Infections in the mouth can lead to heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and brain diseases including dementia. Germs in the mouth can reach the lungs through both the blood stream and from inhalation, resulting in an increased risk for COPD and the development of bronchitis or pneumonia, even if you don't smoke.
