How Sedation Dentistry Can Help You Relax in Dentist’s Chair

How Sedation Dentistry Can Help You Relax in Dentists ChairFor people that suffer from a dental phobia, the very idea of going to the dentist can shake them to their core. These people seek to avoid going to the dentist for even the most routine of procedures. Dental anxiety is more common that you may think, and there is assistance available. Sedation dentistry is a very effective way to provide these patients with the dental care that they need.

There are four levels of sedation available in dentistry. The first level of sedation is minimal sedation. The most common way of placing patients into a state of minimal sedation is by using nitrous oxide. This gas will help you feel at ease in the chair, and it will wear off by the time you are finished with your procedure.

Moderate sedation is the next level of sedation. This level is administered either orally or intravenously. You will still be conscious at this point, but very groggy. If you fall asleep, you can easily be awakened.

The third level of sedation is deep sedation. At this point, you will be teetering on the brink of unconsciousness. The final level of sedation is general anesthesia. You will be rendered completely unconscious at this level. Administering sedation at these last two levels requires special certification.

In addition to patients that suffer from dental anxiety, sedation can be useful for patients with a low tolerance for pain, those who have trouble sitting still in the chair, and for large amounts of dental work.

If you feel like you could really benefit from sedation dentistry, contact our sedation dentist in North Hollywood to set up an appointment.
